How I Became a Pirate (By Melinda Long) – A boy named Jeremy is playing at the beach when a pirate ship pulls into shore. The pirates notice Jeremy’s sand castle and ask if he would like to come along with them and put his digging skills to use burying their treasure. Jeremy goes along and becomes a pirate. Jeremy loves the pirate life, in particular that lack of manners, rules and vegetables. After the ship gets hit by a storm, Jeremy announces he knows a good spot for the treasure. They row to shore and bury it in Jeremy’s backyard. Jeremy bids farewell to the pirates, who ask him to guard their treasure until they can return. And Jeremy knows he can always join them as a pirate again. But not today… he has soccer practice.

Buy it: A Pirate’s Quest: For His Family Heirloom Peg Leg

A Pirate’s Quest: For His Family Heirloom Peg Leg (By Laura Sams & Robert Sams) – A one-legged pirate has lost his family heirloom peg leg when it fell into the lake and drifted away while he was sleeping. The pirate was hoping to pass the peg leg onto his son or daughter and vows that he will never give up the search for his missing peg leg. The pirate follows the water out into the sea, looking for his leg. Along the way, he mistakes a turtle, the arm of an octopus and even another pirate’s peg leg for his own. The pirate collapses from exhaustion on the beach, where a little boy finds his peg leg washed up on shore. He takes the peg leg over to the sleeping pirate and attaches it to his knee. When the pirate wakes up he is overjoyed to have his peg leg back. The book is a fun and humorous read. My five-year-old daughter especially loves the the rhythm of the words as well as the pictures, which are so vivid and textured. The reader will feel as if they are right beside this pirate as he searches for his missing peg leg.
