Buy it: Pumpkin Trouble

Pumpkin Trouble (By Jan Thomas) – “Pumpkin Trouble” is a very funny Halloween story. Duck is making a jack-o’-lantern for Halloween and can’t wait to show his friends. But as he is scooping out the seeds, he falls into the pumpkin and gets stuck. Now Duck is walking around with the pumpkin stuck on his body, with only his feet showing, looking for someone to help him. But when Duck’s friends see him coming, they think he’s a pumpkin monster! When they shout that there’s a pumpkin monster, Duck doesn’t realize they mean him and he starts running. Now Duck is chasing his friends, who still think he’s a pumpkin monster. Finally, Duck smashes into a wall and breaks the pumpkin. Duck’s friends think he’s a hero for saving them from the monster. My daughter, age 6, can read this book on her own and laughs each time she reads it.

The Teeny Tiny Ghost (By Kay Winters) – A great Halloween story about a teeny tiny ghost who is afraid of going out on Halloween and is so timid, he scares himself. But on Halloween night, someone comes knocking at the little ghost’s door. The ghost decides to be brave. He puffs himself up and then gives his best “boo” and “whoooo.” Then the ghost hears clapping and finds out that the knocking at his door was the other little ghosts from his school. The teeny tiny ghost and his friends all dress up in costumes and go out to enjoy Halloween.

Buy it: The Runaway Pumpkin

The Runaway Pumpkin (By Kevin Lewis) – This Halloween story has a great rhythm to it that makes it fun to read out loud. The story begins when the three Baxter children find a huge pumpkin at the top of a hill. But when the pumpkin is cut loose, it begins to roll down the hillside, crashing through fences, the pig sty and chicken coop. But once they stop the rolling pumpkin, the Baxter family has some ideas for how to use it. They work together to shove the enormous pumpkin into the house and soon they smell Granny’s pumpkin soup, bread and pie cooking in the kitchen. The story ends with a great picture of the whole family dressed in costumes sitting down to eat all of the pumpkin treats, with a gigantic jack-o’-lantern joining them at the table.
