Are You Grumpy, Santa? (By Gregg and Evan Spiridellis) – This may be my favorite children’s Christmas book. It’s both funny and heart-warming. In this story, it’s Christmas Eve and things aren’t going too well for Santa. The elves shrank his favorite Santa suit in the dryer, the reindeer are buried in the snow and he gets stuck in a chimney. Santa is grumpy. But then, at one of the houses, Santa finds cookies and a note letting him know he is loved. This is a wonderful story about the importance of doing nice things for others.

Bear Stays Up for Christmas (By Karma Wilson) – All of bear’s friends are determined to keep him awake for Christmas this year. They keep bear busy getting a Christmas tree, decorating and singing carols. But soon bear is the only one still awake. While his friends sleep, Bear happily wraps presents and make surprises. Bear’s friends wake up Christmas morning and they all celebrate together and exchange gifts. This is a sweet story about the joy of giving and celebrating the holiday with loved ones.

Buy it: Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree
Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree (By Robert Barry) – In this cute, rhyming story Mr. Willowby orders an enoromous Christmas tree. It’s so big that the tree is too tall for the house and the top of the tree must be cut off. The top of the tree is given to Mr. Willowby’s maid, who decides it’s slightly too big and cuts off the top. The tree top is then found by a gardener and the story continues as people and then some animals find the tree top and cut off the tip and pass it on. The small pieces of Mr. Willowby’s tree brighten up the homes of several families. Finally the mouse family living in Mr. Willowby’s house gets the tiniest tip of the tree and they are so excited to have a tree like Mr. Willowby.

When Posey Peeked at Christmas (By Ann Dixon) – A Grandma mouse is telling the story of Posey to her grandchildren. In the story she tells, Posey is a young mouse who can hardly wait for Christmas. When no one is watching, she opens all her presents. Then she rewraps the presents and puts them back under the tree. But then Posey feels bad and worries that Santa won’t bring her anything. But in the morning, Posey does get presents from Santa and among them is a small box, on which is written “Do Not Open Till Christmas.” Posey saves the box and never opens it year after year. As the story ends, the grandchildren realize that their grandma is talking about herself and the small box is hanging on her Christmas tree.

Christmas Cookies (By Amy Krouse Rosenthal) – This is a great book for teaching children the lessons of the Christmas season. It also some of the meanings behind holiday words like tradition, appreciative, hope and anticipation. The book revolves around making Christmas cookies. The children in the book learn about sharing the cookies, trying again even when the cookies get burned and believing that Santa will come and eat them.

Santa’s Stowaway (By Brandon Dorman) – This is Sam’s first year working as an elf in Santa’s toy shop. Sam shows Santa a doll he made, which is wearing a blue dress and has a missing button. Santa says the doll is perfect. Sam wonders what makes Christmas so special so he stows away in Santa’s sleigh to find out. He watches Santa as he stops at a house to deliver toys, where a little girl has stayed up to see Santa. The girl is wearing a blue nightgown with a missing button and Santa hands her the doll that Sam made. The girl smiles and says the doll is perfect. Sam now knows why Christmas is special and will never forget the little girl’s smile.

Suzy Goose and the Christmas Star (By Petr Horacek) – It’s Christmas Eve and Suzy Goose and her friends are gathered around their tree. But Suzy decides that it needs a star on top. She sees one up in the sky and she tries to soar and climb high enough to reach it, but she can’t. Then she realizes she has wandered far from her friends and she is lost. But then she hears her friends calling to her and she follows the sound back home. When she gets back, the star in the sky is shining right over their tree.

Fancy Nancy Splendiferous Christmas (By Jane O’Connor) – Fancy Nancy loves to be fancy and so, of course, she loves all the tinsel and lights of Christmas. This year, Fancy Nancy has saved up to buy a fancy Christmas tree topper. She and her family are waiting until Grandpa arrives to decorate the tree, but they put on the new tree topper while they wait. But the tree is accidentally knocked over and the tree topper breaks. When Grandpa arrives he suggests that he and Fancy Nancy make a new topper out of things from around the house. Fancy Nancy loves the new topper and is excited that it will one day be a family heirloom.

A Wish to be a Christmas Tree (By Colleen Monroe) – Every year, the trees at the Christmas tree farm are excited to be chosen and decorated by families. But one tree is too big and too tall and never gets picked. But the tree’s friends, the birds and forest animals, explain to the sad tree that they need him because he keeps them safe and warm. As the tree sleeps that night, he friends decorate him wih berries, icicles and acorns. When he wakes up, the tree is so happy to be a Christmas tree. But his friends point out that he is special to them all year long.

The Christmas Sweater (By Glenn Beck) – It’s Christmas Eve and Eddie is hoping for a bike. His grandfather has been snooping for him downstairs and comes to Eddie’s room to report that he didn’t find a bike, but he did find a homemade Christmas sweater. Eddie is disappointed but his grandfather says that Christmas sweaters turn love into magic. Eddie closes his eyes and finds himself transported to a forest where he puts on the sweater. Then he finds himself sledding with his dad, making a gingerbread house with his mom and on a sleigh ride with his grandfather. When he wakes up Christmas morning, Eddie rushes downstairs and sees that he did get a bike. But he’s more excited to unwrap his Christmas sweater.
