But her grandma advises her to walk proudly, smile big and believe in herself. So Molly Lou Melon does just that. And when Molly has to move to a new town and start at a new school, she remembers her grandma’s wise advice. That advice helps her to make new friends and stand tall, even when faced with a school bully. At the end of the book, Molly Lou Melon writes to her grandma to let her know that all of her advice was right. And that is when the reader finds out that her grandma looks a lot like Molly Lou Melon and must have faced the same challenges growing up.

Giraffes Can’t Dance (By Giles Andreae) – This is a sweet rhyming story of Gerald the giraffe who loves to dance but is tripped up by his long neck, crooked knees and skinny legs. While all the other animals join in the Jungle Dance, Gerald feels sad because he can’t dance as well as everyone else. But one animal believes in Gerald and teaches him how to find the rhythm in everything.

Belinda Begins Ballet (By Amy Young)- This is a story about a girl named Belinda, who was born with huge feet. Belinda finds out that her big feet can be useful when playing soccer or jumping on a trampoline. But because of her big feet, a teacher tries to make Belinda be a clown for the school talent. Belinda wants to be a ballerina and is embarrassed by the clown routine. She practices dancing ballet and goes from a clown in the talent show to a beautiful ballerina.

The Sneetches and Other Stories (By Dr. Seuss) – This is the classic story of the Sneetches. The Sneetches who have stars on their bellies think they are better than the Sneetches who do not. They brag about being the best and won’t play with the plain-belly Sneetches. Then Sylvester McMonkey McBean comes with a machine that can put stars on the plain-belly Sneetches. The plain-belly Sneetches hurry through the machine so they can have stars like the star-belly Sneetches. But soon all of the Sneetches are running through the machine to take the stars off or put them on. Finally, when they don’t know who is who anymore, the Sneetches realize that no kind of Sneetch is better than another.

Violet the Pilot (By Steve Breen) – Violet is different from other little girls. Instead of dolls, Violet plays with tools and builds flying machines out of old junk. The kids at school tease her so she enters the air show with the hope that if she wins, the kids will be nice to her. But on her way to the air show, she sees people who need her help. She helps them and misses the air show. That night a crowd gathers outside Violet’s house, calling her a hero and presenting her with a medal. She stays true to herself and continues flying in her special creations.

I’m Gonna Like Me (By Jamie Lee Curtis) – This is a cute rhyming story about the many things children can like about themselves. The children in this book like their missing teeth, the unique sense of style, their ability to share and their bravery when trying new foods. But they also like themselves when they fall, make mistakes or are picked last for a team. It has a sweet ending that lets kids know they are loved by others and should love themselves too.

Tacky the Penguin (By Helen Lester) – Tacky is not like the other penguins. He doesn’t march in a neat row and he enjoys singing silly songs and doing splashy cannonballs. But one day hunters come looking for penguins. While the other penguins hide, Tacky decides to trick the hunters. He points out to the hunters that penguins march in neat rows and then he demonstrates his funny way of marching. He points out that penguins dive gracefully into the water and then Tacky does a splashy cannonball. The hunters decide this isn’t the land of the penguins and they leave. Then all the penguins realize that while Tacky is odd, he’s a great bird to have around.

One day some men come to decide which bulls will fight in the bull fights in Madrid. While they are watching, Ferdinand is stung by a bee and begins to jump and snort. The men mistakenly think he is fierce and pick Ferdinand for the fight. But when Ferdinand gets into the ring, he just sits quietly and smells the flowers. They send him back home to sit under his favorite tree.

Fish is Fish (By Leo Lionni) – A tadpole and a minnow are inseparable friends. But soon the tadpole changes into a frog and the minnow grows into a fish. The frog climbs out of the pond to explore the big world and leaves his friend behind. He returns to tell his friend, the fish, about all the things he has seen. The fish wants to see these amazing things too and jumps out of the pond onto the bank. Luckily, the frog pushes the fish back into the water. In the end, the fish decides that he already lives in a beautiful world and he’s happy to be a fish.

I Like Me! (By Nancy Carlson) – This is a simple and sweet story about having good self-esteem. A cute pig stars in this book and says she is her own best friend. She does fun things for herself like reading books and riding her bike and takes care of herself by keeping clean and eating right. When she falls down, she picks herself up and when she makes a mistake, she tries again.
